The Maldivian island Dharavandhoo is located in the northern atoll called Baa-atoll, very close to the UNESCO marine biosphere reserve Hanifaru Bay where mantas can be seen in hundreds during manta season. Avela Maldives opened in 2015 offering a truly genuine experience on this little inhabited island. The managers of Aveyla are both experienced divers eager to show their guests the amazing underwater world of Baa atoll. The sea and the life under the surface is the focus of your trip at Aveyla Maldives.
The guesthouse has 16 spacious and comfortable rooms with air condition, private bathrooms, fridge, flat screen TV and safe. Meals are served in the restaurant offering both local dishes as well as international food. Dharavandoo is a great destination for divers but also for non-divers and families enjoying to spend their holiday in the sea. Daily excursions are arranged for snorkelling, fishing, and visits to sandbanks and deserted island. Trips to nearby resorts are also available for the ones curious to try the luxurious resort life with spa treatments, swimming pools and sunset cocktails. At Dharavandhoo no alcohol is served due to the local law restricting alcohol and pork at inhabited islands. Instead you will be served delicious fresh seafood and fresh fruit juices made of the local papaya, coconut and mangos.
You can reach Aveyla Maldives and the island Dharavandhoo with a domestic flight from Male airport. It's a ca 30 minutes flight.
In a few years time Baa atoll has become a world famous destination for underwater photographers. The reason is Hanifaru Bay, a reef formed like a funnel where plankton gets trapped during manta season (south west monsoon). When the wind comes from the south west gathering all the plankton mantas appear in large numbers to feed. In the bay, of a size no bigger than a football square, 250 mantas and 4 whale sharks has been spotted at the same time. Since 2011 the Hanifaru Bay is a UNESCO Marine Protected area where only snorkelling is allowed to protect the animals. The manta snorkelling experience can be done in the manta season between June - November.
In Baa-atoll you will discover many manta points outside the bay where diving is allowed. There are also lots of nice dive sites offering excellent macro diving with great fish life. Since most liveaboards don´t travel this far from Male the reef condition is really good and very few dive boats around. During the north east monsune (January to April) when the sea is calm and the visibility crystal clear, the mantas leave the area. This shifts the focus to the sharks, turtles and macro diving in the area. This season is known for superb visibility, clear blue skies and sometimes strong curents.
